Why Zinc is essential for your Health

ZINC 

t’s an intracellular mineral substance, which is essential in the human body.

The total quantity in the body is 2.3g and is mainly stored in bones.

The daily requirement in adults is 11mg in men and 8mgs in women.

In the human body, zinc is everywhere in blood, cells, enzymes etc.

This makes it an important element in the body.

Functions:

  • Zinc acts as a co factor in enzymes such as lactic dehydrogenase.
  • It has an important role in DNA and protein synthesis, as we know cell tends to die and new one form so in doing so zinc is needed including genetic materials in sperms.
  • It plays a role in secretion of testosterone from leyding cells, increase spermatogenesis and sperm motility.
  • Zinc contains antibacterial effect.
  • Insulin contains zinc!!

Food source:

Meat is a good source of zinc.

Un-milled cereals

Legumes example beans, peas, peanuts, soybeans etc.

Ways for zinc enhancement:

Germination: the process of soaking pulses overnight, water is then drained. This help minerals like zinc to be released from bound form.

Zinc can be lost in meat dripping due to the dissolution of calcium from bones.

Role of zinc in covid-19 treatment:

Zinc has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect; its deficiency will enhance inflammatory response. But long term zinc supplementation can cause reversible haematological defects (i.e., anaemia).
